Fare rules explained: baggage, changes and refunds
The small print that decides what your ticket really costs: fare classes, change fees, refunds and baggage.

Two tickets on the same flight can cost very different amounts, and the difference is usually in the fare rules. Understanding them before you pay is the easiest way to avoid an expensive surprise.
Fare classes
Airlines sell the same cabin in several fare classes. The cheapest sell out first and come with the strictest rules. That's why the fare you saw yesterday may have gone today even though the flight isn't full.
Changes
Most fares allow date changes for a fee plus any difference in fare. The cheapest may not allow changes at all. If your dates might move, a slightly higher fare with free or cheap changes can be the better buy.
Refunds
Many low fares are non-refundable except for government taxes. Flexible fares refund most of the ticket. Always check before paying for travel that depends on a visa.
Baggage
Full-service airlines on long-haul routes usually include checked bags. Low-cost carriers and some 'light' fares don't. Add the cost of bags before comparing.
No-shows
Miss the first flight and many airlines cancel the rest of the ticket. If you can't make a flight, tell us before it leaves.
