A Schengen visa lets you travel across most of Europe for up to 90 days in any 180. You apply to the country where you'll spend the most nights, or where you enter first if the nights are equal, and that country's rules decide the paperwork.
Appointments are the bottleneck. In spring and summer, slots at the visa centres in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Mumbai can be weeks away, so we start six to eight weeks before travel and book the appointment as soon as your file is ready.
Which country to apply to

When to apply
Up to six months before travel and no later than 15 days. Six to eight weeks ahead is the safe window in peak season.

- Passport valid for at least three months after you leave Europe, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages
- Recent photographs to the consulate's specification
- Completed application form and cover letter
- Flight reservation and hotel bookings for every night
- Travel insurance with at least €30,000 medical cover
- Bank statements for the last three to six months
- Income tax returns, usually for the last three years
- Employer's letter with leave approval and recent salary slips, or business registration documents if self-employed

How long does a Schengen visa take from India?
Usually about 15 calendar days after your biometric appointment, sometimes longer in peak season. Add the wait for an appointment, which can be several weeks from April to August.
Which country should I apply to if I'm visiting several?
The country where you'll spend the most nights. If nights are equal, the country you enter first.
Can I apply for a Schengen visa from Kochi or Trivandrum?
Yes. Several countries take applications in Kochi; others need you to visit Bangalore, Chennai or Mumbai. We tell you which centre applies and book the slot.
