Travel insurance: what it covers and when it's required
Medical bills abroad, cancelled trips, lost bags, and the visas that won't be issued without a policy.

Travel insurance is the cheapest part of any trip and the one most often skipped. A hospital night in Europe or the US can cost more than the holiday.
What it usually covers
- Emergency medical treatment and evacuation
- Trip cancellation and cutting a trip short
- Lost or delayed baggage and passports
- Missed connections and delays
- Personal liability
What it usually doesn't
- Pre-existing conditions, unless declared and covered
- Adventure sports, unless added
- Travel against government advice
When it's required
A Schengen visa needs insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover valid across the Schengen area. Some other countries and many cruises also require it.
Buy it when you book
Cancellation cover only protects you from the day you buy the policy. We issue insurance in the same conversation as the ticket. Read insurance for senior travellers or see the Schengen visa requirements.
