Gulf flights from South India: peak dates and how to save
Onam, Eid and the school holidays drive Gulf fares from Kochi, Calicut, Trivandrum, Chennai and Hyderabad. Here's how to plan around them.

The corridor between South India and the Gulf is one of the busiest in the world. Fares swing hard around a few predictable dates, and planning around them saves real money.
The peaks
Onam, Christmas and New Year, the summer school break and both Eids push fares up, in both directions. For those dates, book eight to ten weeks ahead; the cheap fare classes go first.
Off-peak, wait for sales
Gulf carriers and Indian airlines run sales through the year. With flexible dates, we can watch a fare and issue when it drops.
Compare airports
Calicut, Kochi and Trivandrum price Gulf routes differently, and so do Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. A cheaper fare from the next airport plus a short drive is often worth it.
Check what's included
Low-cost carriers charge separately for bags and meals; some full-service fares charge for date changes. Compare the total with the rules.
