Europe trip cost from India: Switzerland, Paris and Central Europe
Flights, hotels, rail passes, the Schengen visa and insurance: what a Europe holiday costs and how to plan the budget.

Switzerland is the most-searched Europe holiday from India, followed by Paris, London and Central Europe. A first Europe trip is a big investment, and the most common question we hear is simply: "How much should we budget?" Prices change with the season, your departure city and your hotel choices, so here's where the money goes and how to plan a realistic budget.
The typical first trip
Most first-time travellers from India spend 8 to 12 nights in Europe, often combining:
- Switzerland (4–5 nights): Lucerne, Interlaken, Mount Titlis and the Jungfraujoch
- Paris (3 nights): the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, a Seine cruise and Disneyland for families
- One more country: Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands or the UK
A popular, better-value alternative is Prague, Vienna and Budapest, which costs considerably less than Switzerland and Paris.
Where the money goes
1. Flights
The largest single cost. Mumbai and Bangalore have the widest choice of direct and one-stop flights; Kochi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Trivandrum connect via the Gulf or through Mumbai and Delhi. Book two to four months ahead, once the visa route is clear. An open-jaw ticket (into Zurich, out of Paris, for example) saves time and backtracking.
2. Hotels
Switzerland and Paris are the most expensive. Prague, Vienna and Budapest give much more for the money. Central locations cost more but save on transport and time. Rooms in Europe are smaller than many Indian travellers expect; family rooms for four are limited and should be booked early.
3. Rail and passes
The Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses, lake steamers and many museums, with discounts on mountain railways. It's good value if you move around a lot; for a two-base trip, point-to-point tickets can be cheaper. Between countries, high-speed trains (Zurich–Paris, for example) are often quicker than flying.
4. Mountain excursions
The Jungfraujoch ("Top of Europe") and Mount Titlis are the most memorable experiences in Switzerland and are significant line items in a Swiss budget. The Swiss Travel Pass gives a discount on most mountain excursions but does not cover them fully.
5. Visa and insurance
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa. The consular fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus the visa centre's service charge. Travel insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover is mandatory. The UK needs a separate visa (£135 for a standard six-month visitor visa). See the Schengen visa guide.
6. Food
Eating out in Switzerland and Paris is expensive by Indian standards. Indian restaurants exist in all major cities. Hotels with breakfast included help, and supermarkets are good for lunches on the go. Group tours often include Indian dinners.
7. Sightseeing and city taxes
Entry tickets (the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Disneyland Paris), Seine and lake cruises, and local city taxes, which are charged per person per night by many European hotels.
What changes the price most
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Season | July and August are the most expensive; May, June and September offer similar weather for less. |
| Countries | Switzerland and Paris cost the most; Central Europe the least. |
| Hotel level | Central four-star hotels in Switzerland are a big step up from three-star. |
| Group or private | Group tours bring flight and hotel costs down noticeably. |
| Excursions | Two major Swiss mountain trips can add significantly per person. |
When to go
- April to June: spring flowers, snow on the peaks, long days. Apply for the visa early; appointments are scarce.
- July to August: warmest weather and Indian school holidays, so the highest prices and crowds.
- September to October: quieter, still pleasant, autumn colours. Excellent value.
- December to March: snow in Switzerland, Christmas markets in December. Short days.
How to keep it down
- Travel in May, June or September rather than July and August.
- Combine Switzerland with cheaper Central Europe instead of Paris and London.
- Choose one major Swiss mountain excursion instead of two.
- Stay central to avoid transport costs, but choose three-star in Paris.
- Join a group tour, which also includes visas and Indian meals.
- Book flights once the visa route is clear, but not too late.

Questions, answered
How many days are enough for a first Europe trip?
Eight to twelve nights covers Switzerland and Paris plus one more country without rushing. A week works for Switzerland alone or for Prague, Vienna and Budapest.
What is the Schengen visa fee for Indians?
€90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus the visa centre's service charge. Travel insurance with €30,000 of medical cover is also required.
Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
If you're moving between several towns and using lake steamers and museums, usually yes. For a two-base trip, point-to-point tickets can be cheaper. We work it out for your route.
What is the cheapest month to visit Europe from India?
Outside Christmas, the winter months are cheapest. For good weather and value, choose May, June or September rather than July and August.
Is a Europe group tour cheaper?
Usually, yes. Group air fares and hotel rates bring the per-person price down, and visas and Indian meals are often included.
