Kashmir by season: when to go and what to expect
Tulips in spring, green meadows in summer, gold in autumn and snow in winter: choosing the right month for your Kashmir trip.

Kashmir searches peak in March, April and December, but every season has its own appeal. Spring brings tulips and blossom, summer green meadows and cool air, autumn golden chinar trees, and winter deep snow. For travellers from South India, it's a different world without needing a passport, and one of the most popular honeymoons and family holidays we plan.
Here's what each season is like, what's open, what to pack, and a typical itinerary.
At a glance
| Season | Months | Daytime in Srinagar | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | March to May | Mild to warm, cool nights | Tulips, blossom, honeymoons |
| Summer | June to August | Warm, pleasant in the hills | Families, meadows, escaping the heat |
| Autumn | September to November | Crisp and clear | Chinar colours, photography, quieter trips |
| Winter | December to February | Cold, often below freezing at night | Snow, skiing, Gulmarg |
Spring: March to May
The most popular time to visit. Almond blossom appears in March, followed by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Asia's largest, usually open for a few weeks from late March into April. The Mughal gardens of Nishat and Shalimar bloom, and snow still lies on the higher slopes at Gulmarg and Sonamarg.
Days are pleasant and nights are cool. Bring a warm jacket. Book early, especially for the tulip festival and the Easter and school holiday weeks.
Summer: June to August
Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg are carpeted in green, and the Lidder River runs full. It's a welcome escape from the heat in the south, and the best season for families: pony rides, river walks, the Gulmarg gondola and the drives to the Aru and Betaab valleys.
Srinagar can feel warm in the middle of the day, so most visitors spend more time in the hill stations. The Amarnath Yatra runs in July and August, which makes Pahalgam and Sonamarg busier and brings tighter security on some roads. We plan around it.
Autumn: September to November
Kashmir's quiet secret. The chinar trees turn gold and red, the skies are clear and the crowds thin out. It's ideal for honeymooners and photographers. Saffron fields near Pampore bloom purple in late October and early November. By November, nights are cold and the first snow can reach Gulmarg.
Winter: December to February
Snow transforms the valley. Gulmarg becomes one of Asia's best ski resorts, and the gondola climbs high above the clouds. Dal Lake can partly freeze in the coldest weeks. For many South Indian families, it's the first time they've seen snow.
Pack properly warm clothes: thermals, a heavy jacket, gloves, a woollen cap and waterproof boots. Some roads, including the drive to Sonamarg, can close after heavy snow, and flights occasionally face weather delays, so keep a buffer day. Hotels have heating, and houseboats use heaters and electric blankets.
A typical week
- Srinagar (2–3 nights): a houseboat night on Dal Lake, a shikara ride at sunset, the Mughal gardens and the old city
- Gulmarg (1–2 nights or a day trip): the gondola, skiing in winter, meadows in summer
- Pahalgam (2 nights): the Aru and Betaab valleys and Chandanwari
- Sonamarg (day trip): the Thajiwas glacier drive
Six or seven nights is ideal. Add Ladakh in summer, by road via Sonamarg and the Zoji La pass or by a short flight.
Getting there
Fly to Srinagar via Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore. There are good connections from every South Indian city, but no direct flights from Kerala, so allow a full travel day. We arrange the connecting flights and an airport transfer.
Houseboats
A night on a Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake houseboat is part of every Kashmir trip. Houseboats are graded, and the best have carved cedar interiors, warm hosts and excellent Kashmiri food. Nigeen Lake is quieter; Dal Lake is livelier and closer to the boulevard.
Food
Try the wazwan feast, kahwa (saffron tea) and Kashmiri breads from a local bakery. Vegetarian travellers will find plenty of options, including dum aloo and nadru (lotus stem).
