Maldives from India: resort types and what a trip costs

In the Maldives, the resort is the holiday. How transfers, meal plans and villa types decide the price.

"Maldives package price" and "Maldives package for couple" are among the most common holiday searches from India. The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on four choices: the resort, the transfer, the meal plan and the villa. Two couples flying on the same day can spend very different amounts, and both have a wonderful time.

Here's how each choice affects the price and the experience, so you can decide where to spend and where to save.

Why the Maldives works so well from India

  • Short flights: Malé is about an hour from Trivandrum and Kochi, and two to three hours from Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
  • No visa hassle: every nationality receives a free 30-day visa on arrival with a confirmed booking.
  • The same time zone, almost: just half an hour behind India.

Choice 1: the resort

Each resort occupies its own island, so the resort is the holiday. You'll eat, swim, snorkel and relax there. Price follows a handful of factors:

  • Brand and service level: from friendly four-star resorts to some of the world's most exclusive hotels.
  • Island size: larger islands have more restaurants and activities; smaller ones feel more private.
  • The house reef: a good reef close to the beach means snorkelling straight from your villa.
  • Dining: the number and style of restaurants, including Indian and vegetarian options.

Mid-range resorts can be excellent value. The top tier is a different world, with private pools, butlers and remarkable food, and prices to match.

Choice 2: the transfer

TransferResortsWhat to know
SpeedboatNorth and South Malé atolls, close to the airportQuickest and cheapest; you can arrive on a late flight
SeaplaneRemote atollsSpectacular views; daylight only, so late arrivals may need a night near Malé; strict baggage limits
Domestic flight and boatFar atollsOften good value for longer stays; runs later than seaplanes

The transfer is charged per person, return, and for remote resorts it can be a significant part of the total. For a short stay, a speedboat resort gives you more time on the beach.

Choice 3: the meal plan

Everything on a resort island is bought on that island, so the meal plan matters more than in most destinations.

  • Bed and breakfast: cheapest upfront, but restaurant prices on a private island add up quickly.
  • Half board: breakfast and dinner. A good balance for resorts near Malé.
  • Full board: all three meals.
  • All-inclusive: meals, drinks and often some activities. Often the best value for remote resorts and for families.

Choice 4: the villa

  • Beach villas: step straight onto the sand. More private, often cheaper, and better for families with small children.
  • Water villas: built over the lagoon, with steps into the water from your deck. The classic honeymoon image.
  • Pool villas: beach or water villas with a private pool, for those who want the full experience.

Many couples split their stay: two nights in a beach villa, then two in a water villa. You get both experiences and a lower total.

How many nights?

Three nights works for a short getaway at a speedboat resort. Four or five nights is the sweet spot for most honeymooners, especially with a seaplane transfer. Many couples combine the Maldives with Sri Lanka or Dubai.

When to go

  • November to April: the dry season, calm seas and the highest prices, especially Christmas, New Year and Indian wedding season.
  • May to October: the wet season. Expect some rain and wind, but also lower prices, upgrades and fewer guests. It's often sunny between showers.

Where to save, where to spend

  • Save: choose a speedboat resort for a short trip; travel in May, June or September; split beach and water villas.
  • Spend: on the meal plan for remote resorts, on a resort with a strong house reef if you snorkel, and on a water villa for at least part of the stay if it's a honeymoon.
  • Watch: taxes, the Maldives green tax and transfer charges. We include all of them in our quotes.

Honeymoon extras

Most resorts offer honeymoon benefits such as a celebration dinner, spa credits or a room upgrade when you show your marriage certificate, usually within six to twelve months of the wedding. We request them when we book.

Questions, answered

How many days are enough for the Maldives?

Four or five nights is ideal for most couples. Three nights works at a resort near Malé with a speedboat transfer.

Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?

No advance visa. Every nationality receives a free 30-day visa on arrival with a confirmed resort booking and return ticket.

Water villa or beach villa?

Water villas give you the lagoon from your deck; beach villas are more private and often cheaper. Many couples split their stay between the two.

Is all-inclusive worth it in the Maldives?

Often, yes, especially at remote resorts and for families, because all food and drink is bought on the island at resort prices.

What is the cheapest time to visit the Maldives?

May to October, the wet season. Prices drop noticeably and there's often sun between the showers.
