South Africa's new visa schemes make travel easier for Indians

A trusted tour operator scheme for groups and a new Electronic Travel Authorisation: what South Africa's visa reforms mean for travellers from India.

South Africa has made two significant changes to how visitors from India obtain visas. A Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), launched in early 2025, simplifies visas for tour groups. An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), launched on 29 October 2025, is designed to replace much of the paper-based process for individual travellers from selected countries, including India.

India is one of South Africa's fastest-growing source markets, and both changes aim to remove the paperwork and waiting times that previously deterred travellers from Cape Town, the Garden Route, the Winelands and the safari parks.

The Trusted Tour Operator Scheme

Under the scheme, approved tour operators enter into agreements with South Africa's Department of Home Affairs and take responsibility for the groups they bring. In return, their groups benefit from simplified documentation and faster processing. The scheme initially focused on India and China and was expanded from 65 to 110 approved operators. According to the Department of Home Affairs, around 31,800 additional tourists travelled through the scheme in its first six months.

What it means for you

  • If you're joining a group tour to South Africa, ask whether the organiser is approved under the scheme.
  • Group members still submit personal documents, but the process is simpler and quicker than an individual application.
  • Independent travellers and families travelling privately don't use the scheme; they apply individually.

The Electronic Travel Authorisation

South Africa's ETA is part of a wider move to digital visas. Eligible travellers apply online rather than submitting paper applications at a visa centre. The South African government has said it is still in the early stages of implementation, and the process and eligibility may continue to evolve.

Planning a South Africa trip

  • Best time: September to April for Cape Town and the Garden Route; May to September (the dry season) for safaris in Kruger.
  • Length: ten to twelve days covers Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route and a safari.
  • Flights: via the Gulf or East Africa from South Indian cities.
  • Health: check yellow fever certificate requirements if you transit through a country with risk of transmission.

Updated October 2026. South Africa's visa arrangements are still changing, so we confirm the current requirements, documents and processing times when you enquire. For a safari closer to home, see our Kenya and Masai Mara packages and the great migration guide.
