Umrah visa or Umrah package: which suits you?

More pilgrims now book just the visa. Here's when that makes sense, and when a full package is the better choice.

Searches for the Umrah visa on its own have grown by half in three years, and now match searches for full Umrah packages. That reflects a real change: Saudi Arabia has made it easier for pilgrims to arrange parts of the journey themselves, and many families now ask us for just the visa. Both routes work well. The right one depends on who's travelling, when, and how much you want to arrange yourself.

This guide explains what each option includes, the Saudi rules that affect both, and a simple way to decide. It reflects the position at the time of writing (October 2026).

What changed

Three changes shape Umrah planning today:

  • Nusuk: the official Saudi platform for Umrah permits, Rawdah visits at the Prophet's Mosque and other bookings. Every pilgrim needs it, whichever route they choose.
  • Linked bookings: Umrah visa applications now need hotel and transport bookings registered through the Saudi system. A visa can't be issued against an informal booking.
  • Tighter validity: recent rules shortened the window in which you must enter Saudi Arabia after the visa is issued. Plan to travel soon after it arrives.

Option 1: the Umrah visa only

We file the visa through the licensed Saudi system and advise on the permits you need. You arrange your flights, hotels in Makkah and Madinah, transport between the cities and your Nusuk bookings, or ask us for any of these individually.

It suits you if

  • You have performed Umrah before and know Makkah and Madinah.
  • You're travelling as young adults or a small family, comfortable with walking and managing logistics.
  • You want specific flights, hotels or dates that a group package doesn't offer.
  • You're combining Umrah with a family visit in the Gulf.

Watch out for

  • Hotels must be registered in the Saudi system to support the visa.
  • Transport between Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah needs planning; the Haramain high-speed train is an excellent option between the cities.
  • Nusuk time slots for Umrah and the Rawdah can fill in busy periods. Book them as soon as your dates are fixed.

Option 2: a full Umrah package

A package brings everything together: the visa, flights from your nearest airport, hotels at an agreed distance from the Haram, transfers, Ziyarat visits in Makkah and Madinah and a guide. Many include a pre-departure class on the rites of Umrah.

It suits you if

  • It's your first Umrah.
  • Elderly parents or pilgrims with limited mobility are travelling.
  • You want a guide, a pre-departure briefing and someone to call in Saudi Arabia at any hour.
  • You're travelling in Ramadan, the school holidays or another peak period, when hotels near the Haram sell out and group allocations protect you.
  • Women are travelling without a male relative and would like the reassurance of a group.

What really drives the cost

Whichever route you choose, four things decide the price:

  1. Hotel distance from the Haram. This matters more than anything else. A hotel a few minutes' walk from the gates costs much more than one a kilometre away, but it saves taxis, long walks five times a day and exhaustion, especially for elders.
  2. Season. Ramadan, particularly the last ten nights, and the December and summer holidays are the most expensive periods. The months after Hajj and early in the season are better value.
  3. Length of stay. Most pilgrims from India stay 10 to 15 days, split between Makkah and Madinah.
  4. Flights. Direct flights from Kochi, Calicut, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore to Jeddah or Madinah cost more in peak weeks. Flying into Madinah and out of Jeddah, or the reverse, often works best.

Packages often secure better hotel rates in peak periods because of group allocations. For a small family in a quiet month, the visa-only route can be cheaper.

Requirements for both routes

  • Passport valid for at least six months from your entry date
  • Recent photograph on a white background
  • Meningitis (ACYW) vaccination certificate, taken at least ten days before travel
  • Confirmed return flight
  • Hotel and transport bookings registered in the Saudi system
  • Mandatory medical insurance, issued with the visa

Saudi Arabia no longer requires women to travel with a male guardian (mahram) when they travel with an organised group. Some documents may still be requested for younger women travelling alone; we tell you what applies.

Questions, answered

Can I get an Umrah visa without a package?

Yes. We file the Umrah visa on its own, but you'll need hotel and transport bookings registered in the Saudi system before it can be issued. We can arrange those individually too.

How long does an Umrah visa take from India?

Usually about a week once the documents and bookings are complete. Apply three to four weeks before travel, earlier for Ramadan.

Is a meningitis vaccine required for Umrah?

Yes. Pilgrims need a meningitis (ACYW) vaccination certificate, with the vaccine taken at least ten days before arrival in Saudi Arabia.

Can women perform Umrah without a mahram?

Saudi rules allow women to perform Umrah without a male guardian when travelling with an organised group. Ask us what documents apply to your case.

Is a package always more expensive?

Not always. In peak seasons, group hotel allocations often make a package better value. In quiet months, a small family booking the visa and hotels separately can spend less.
