Georgia, Armenia or Azerbaijan: which Caucasus trip from Dubai?

The three most-searched trips from Dubai compared: scenery, cities, food, visas and the best time to go.

Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan are the top three "tour package from Dubai" searches, and it's easy to see why. All three are about three hours' flight from the UAE, there are direct flights from Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, and each suits a four or five-night break. They offer mountains, snow in winter, old towns, great food and a welcome change of scenery.

Here's how they compare, so you can choose the right one for your dates, passport and interests.

Georgia

The most popular of the three, with the widest range. Tbilisi has a charming old town of wooden balconies, sulphur baths and a cable car to the fortress. The Georgian Military Road leads north to Gudauri and Kazbegi, where the Gergeti Trinity Church sits beneath Mount Kazbek. To the east, Kakheti is Georgia's wine country, with traditional qvevri wineries and the hilltop town of Sighnaghi. In summer, Batumi on the Black Sea adds a beach.

Winter: Gudauri is one of the region's best ski resorts and a favourite for families seeing snow for the first time.

Food: khachapuri (cheese bread), khinkali (dumplings) and plenty of vegetarian dishes made with walnuts, beans and aubergine.

Armenia

Quieter, excellent value and full of history. Yerevan is a relaxed city of cafés and pink stone, with Mount Ararat on the horizon on a clear day. Day trips take you to the pagan temple at Garni, the cliff-carved monastery at Geghard, Lake Sevan and the forested town of Dilijan. The Wings of Tatev cable car, one of the world's longest, is a longer day trip worth making.

Food: lavash, grilled meats, dolma and excellent apricots and brandy.

Azerbaijan

The most urban of the three. Baku combines a UNESCO-listed walled old city with the Flame Towers, the Heydar Aliyev Centre and a long seaside boulevard. Day trips go to the rock art of Gobustan, the mud volcanoes and the fire temple. Further north, Gabala and Sheki offer green mountains, cable cars and a historic khan's palace.

Food: plov, kebabs, saffron rice and a strong tea culture. Halal food is easy to find everywhere.

Visas, by passport

Entry rules depend on your nationality, your UAE residence and other visas you hold:

  • Western and GCC passports: visa-free or simple e-visas for all three.
  • Indian passports: e-visas for all three. Georgia is visa-free if you hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit.
  • Filipino and other passports: rules vary; UAE residence and other visas can help.

Tell us your passport and we'll confirm the easiest entry before you book.

Can you combine them?

Yes. Georgia and Armenia combine easily by road from Tbilisi to Yerevan, in about five to six hours with scenic stops. A week covers the highlights of both. Azerbaijan is usually visited separately by air, since land borders with Armenia are closed.

Which one should you choose?

  • First trip, or travelling with family: Georgia.
  • Snow: Georgia (Gudauri) or Azerbaijan (Shahdag, Gabala).
  • History and value: Armenia.
  • City break and shopping: Azerbaijan.
  • A longer trip: Georgia and Armenia together.

Tell us your passport and dates and we'll confirm entry and suggest an itinerary. See Caucasus and Central Asia and long weekends.
