Japan visa for UAE residents

Who needs a visa for Japan, how UAE residents apply, and how to plan around cherry blossom season.

Japan is a growing favourite with UAE residents. Direct flights from Dubai and Abu Dhabi reach Tokyo and Osaka in about ten hours, and the cherry blossom, autumn colours, food and bullet trains draw families and couples alike. Whether you need a visa depends almost entirely on your passport.

Here's who needs a visa, how UAE residents apply, what to submit and how to plan around cherry blossom season. It reflects the position at the time of writing (October 2026).

How UAE residents apply

If you need a visa, you apply in the UAE as a resident, through the Embassy of Japan in Abu Dhabi or the Consulate-General in Dubai, or through accredited channels, depending on your nationality and case. Japan's eVISA is available to some nationalities resident in the UAE for short-term tourism, issued as a digital notice you show on your phone. Others receive a visa in the passport.

Typical documents

  • Passport valid for the trip, with blank pages
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
  • Visa application form and photograph (45 × 35 mm)
  • Day-by-day itinerary ("schedule of stay")
  • Flight reservation
  • Hotel bookings for every night
  • Salary certificate or employer letter with leave approval
  • Bank statements for the last three to six months
  • Trade licence and company documents, if self-employed

If you're visiting friends or family in Japan, add an invitation letter and their documents, and a letter of guarantee if they're paying for your trip.

Fees

Japan revised its visa fees for most nationalities from 1 July 2026. Fees depend on your nationality and the visa type. We confirm the current amount for your passport before applying.

How long does it take?

Usually about a week after submission, and longer in busy months. Apply three to four weeks before travel, and five to six weeks ahead for late March and early April.

Tips for a smooth application

  1. Make sure your residence visa is valid well beyond your return date.
  2. Keep the itinerary, bookings and leave dates consistent.
  3. Use refundable hotels until the visa is issued.
  4. Explain any large recent deposits in your bank statement.
  5. Apply early for spring.

Cherry blossom season

The bloom peaks in Tokyo and Kyoto in late March to early April, moving north to the Fuji lakes in April and Hokkaido in May. Full bloom lasts about a week in any one place. In 2027, Eid al-Fitr is expected around 9 or 10 March, a little before the blossom; adding leave to the Eid break or travelling at the end of March gives you the best chance. Book hotels by December; Kyoto fills quickly.

A first Japan trip

  • Tokyo (3–4 nights): Shibuya, Asakusa, teamLab and a day trip to Mount Fuji
  • Kyoto (3 nights): temples, Arashiyama and a day in Nara
  • Osaka (1–2 nights): street food, the castle and Universal Studios

Fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka to avoid backtracking. Halal and vegetarian food is easier to find than many expect, especially in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. We note dietary needs on every booking.
