Maldives from Dubai: choosing the right resort

Maldives searches from the UAE are mostly resort names. Here's how to choose by transfer, meal plan, reef and budget.

UAE residents search for Maldives resorts by name more than for packages, and for good reason: in the Maldives, the resort is the holiday. Each one occupies its own island, so where you stay decides what you'll eat, how you'll snorkel and how the trip feels. With direct flights of about four hours from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, it's one of the best short breaks from the UAE.

Here's how to choose a resort by transfer, meal plan, villa, reef and budget.

Getting there

Direct flights connect Dubai and Abu Dhabi with Malé in about four hours. All nationalities receive a free 30-day visa on arrival with a confirmed booking and return ticket. That makes the Maldives an easy choice for mixed-nationality families and groups.

Choice 1: the transfer

TransferResortsBest for
Speedboat (15–60 minutes)North and South Malé atollsLong weekends; late arrivals; lower cost
Seaplane (30–60 minutes)Remote atollsThe view; secluded resorts; stays of four nights or more
Domestic flight and boatThe far atollsLonger stays; later connections than seaplanes

Seaplanes fly in daylight only. If your flight lands in the evening, you may need a night near Malé first. For a three-night long weekend, a speedboat resort gives you the most time on the beach.

Choice 2: the meal plan

On a private island, everything is bought on the island at resort prices.

  • Bed and breakfast: lowest upfront cost, but meals add up.
  • Half board: a good balance for resorts near Malé.
  • Full board: all three meals.
  • All-inclusive: often the best value for remote resorts, families and anyone who enjoys a drink by the pool.

Choice 3: the villa

  • Water villas: over the lagoon, with steps straight into the sea.
  • Beach villas: more private, better for small children, and usually better value.
  • Pool villas: beach or water villas with a private pool.

Many couples split the stay between a beach villa and a water villa, getting both experiences for less.

Choice 4: the reef

If you snorkel, choose a resort with a good house reef close to the beach. It's the difference between swimming with turtles from your villa and taking boat trips. Some resorts are known for manta rays and whale sharks in season; others for calm, shallow lagoons ideal for children and beginners.

Choice 5: families or couples

  • Families: look for kids' clubs, family villas with two bedrooms, shallow lagoons and all-inclusive plans.
  • Couples: some resorts are adults-only or adults-focused, quieter and more romantic.
  • Groups and celebrations: larger islands with several restaurants and activities.

When to go

  • November to April: dry season and peak prices, especially around UAE National Day, Christmas and New Year.
  • May to October: wet season; lower prices, upgrades and fewer guests, with sunny spells between showers.
  • Long weekends: Eid and National Day breaks suit a three or four-night speedboat resort. Book early, as they sell out.

Budget: where to save and where to spend

  • Save: choose a speedboat resort, travel in the wet season, split villa types.
  • Spend: on the meal plan for a remote resort, a strong house reef, and a water villa for at least part of the stay.
  • Watch: transfer charges, taxes and the Maldives green tax. Our quotes include them all.

Honeymoon and celebration extras

Resorts often offer honeymoon or anniversary benefits, such as dinners, spa credits or upgrades, when you show your marriage certificate. We request them when we book.
