Travelling abroad with family: a planning guide
Children, grandparents and everyone in between: how to plan a family trip abroad that works for every age.

A family trip abroad works when the pace suits the youngest and the oldest travellers. Here's how we plan them.
Choose the right destination
Singapore, Dubai, Thailand and Malaysia are easy first trips: short flights, simple food choices and plenty for children. Switzerland and Japan suit families with older children.
Slow the pace
Two or three bases rather than five. Build in a rest afternoon every couple of days.
Documents for children
Every child needs their own passport, and visas for minors need both parents' documents. Start early.
Elderly travellers
Book wheelchair assistance at airports, choose hotels with lifts and short walks, and buy travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions if needed. Read insurance for senior travellers.
Rooms and food
Family rooms or connecting rooms, and vegetarian or halal meals arranged in advance.
Group or private?
Group tours suit families who'd rather not plan; private trips suit young children. Read group tour or private holiday?
