Schengen visa from the UAE: which embassy, documents and appointment tips

How UAE residents apply for a Schengen visa: choosing the embassy, salary certificate and NOC, insurance and appointment timing.

"Schengen visa UAE" and appointment searches peak in May, as residents plan summer in Europe. The Schengen visa covers 29 European countries, including France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Spain and the Netherlands. For UAE residents the process is well established, but appointments are scarce from March to June, and the documents differ in a few important ways from applying in your home country.

Here's how residents apply. It reflects the position at the time of writing (October 2026).

Who needs a Schengen visa?

  • Need a visa: Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese and many other passports.
  • Visa-free: UAE and other GCC citizens, and Western passports such as UK, US, Canadian and Australian. These travellers will need Europe's new ETIAS travel authorisation once it starts (expected late 2026, €20).

Which embassy?

  • Apply to the country where you'll spend the most nights.
  • If the nights are equal, the country you'll enter first.

You apply through that country's visa centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Don't pick a country because it has easier appointments; applying to the wrong consulate is a common reason for refusal.

Residence validity

As a UAE resident applying in the UAE, your residence visa usually needs to be valid for at least three months beyond your return date. Some consulates want more. If your residence is due for renewal, renew first.

Fees

ApplicantConsular fee
Adult (12+)€90
Child 6–11€45
Child under 6Free

The visa centre adds a service charge, paid in dirhams. Fees are not refunded if the visa is refused.

Documents

  • Passport valid for at least three months beyond your return, issued within the last ten years, with two blank pages
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID (copies and originals)
  • Completed application form and photographs
  • Salary certificate and a no-objection certificate (NOC) from your employer, showing your role, salary, length of service and approved leave
  • Bank statements for the last three to six months, stamped
  • Trade licence, memorandum of association and company bank statements, if self-employed
  • Flight reservation and hotel bookings for every night
  • Travel insurance with at least €30,000 of medical cover, valid across the Schengen area
  • Day-by-day itinerary and a cover letter
  • For family visits: an invitation and your host's documents
  • For children: birth certificate and both parents' consent

Appointment tips

  • Start early: eight weeks before spring and summer travel.
  • Prepare first, book second: have your file complete so you can take the first good slot.
  • Watch for cancellations: new slots appear as others cancel, often early in the morning.
  • Check both emirates: some countries take applications in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
  • Biometrics: if you've given fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, you may not need to again.

Processing time

Usually about 15 calendar days after the appointment, and longer in summer. You can apply up to six months before travel and no later than 15 days before.

Common reasons for refusal

  • Residence validity too short
  • Insufficient or unexplained funds
  • Documents that don't match: dates, names, salary
  • Unclear purpose or itinerary
  • Applying to the wrong consulate
  • Insurance that doesn't meet the requirements

Multiple-entry visas

Frequent travellers with a good visa history can receive longer multiple-entry visas. Each stay is limited to 90 days in any 180.

The UK is separate

The UK isn't part of Schengen, so a London stop needs a separate UK visa or ETA. See UK visa from the UAE.
