Turkey from the UAE: visa rules by passport and the best time to go

Turkey is the second-biggest destination search from the UAE. Entry rules by passport, the best months and a one-week route.

After Kerala, Turkey is the biggest destination search from the UAE. It's about four and a half hours' flight away, with direct flights from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to Istanbul and seasonal flights to other cities. It combines a great city, extraordinary landscapes, excellent food and a long history, and halal food is everywhere.

Here's how the visa works by passport, the best months to go, and a one-week route.

Visa rules depend on your passport

PassportTypical requirement
UAE and other GCC citizensVisa-free for short stays
Many Western passports (UK, EU, many others)Visa-free for short stays; a few need an e-visa
Indiane-visa if you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or Irish visa or residence permit; otherwise a sticker visa applied for in the UAE
Filipinoe-visa with a qualifying visa or residence permit; otherwise a visa applied for in the UAE
Egyptian, Pakistani and othersRules vary; often conditional e-visa or a sticker visa

Conditional e-visas usually require the qualifying visa or residence permit to be valid on arrival, and a return ticket and hotel booking. Tell us your passport and we'll confirm.

Applying for a sticker visa in the UAE

If you don't qualify for the e-visa, you apply through the Turkish visa application process in the UAE with your passport, residence visa, salary certificate, bank statements, flight and hotel bookings, and insurance. Allow three to four weeks, and more before Eid and the summer holidays.

Best time to go

SeasonWhat it's like
April to JuneSpring flowers, comfortable sightseeing weather; tulips in Istanbul in April
July to AugustHot inland and in Istanbul; busy on the coast; good for beaches
September to OctoberWarm and settled; ideal for Cappadocia and the coast
November to MarchCool and quieter; snow in Cappadocia and good-value hotels

Eid breaks are popular for Turkey, so book early for those dates.

A one-week route

  • Istanbul (3 nights): Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar and a Bosphorus cruise
  • Cappadocia (2 nights): a hot-air balloon at dawn, a cave hotel, the Göreme open-air museum and underground cities
  • Then choose: Pamukkale's white terraces and ancient Ephesus, or the Antalya coast for beaches

Domestic flights connect Istanbul with Cappadocia and Antalya in about an hour.

The balloon flight

The Cappadocia balloon is the highlight of most trips. Flights depend on the wind and are cancelled in poor weather, so stay two nights to give yourself a second chance. Book with the package; they sell out in peak season.

Food and shopping

Turkish breakfasts, kebabs, pide, mezze, baklava and Turkish delight. Halal food is the norm. Istanbul's bazaars are good for carpets, ceramics, spices and lamps; bargain politely.

For families

Turkey works well with children: short internal flights, family rooms and plenty of variety. Antalya's all-inclusive resorts are popular in summer. Travel with elderly parents is easier with fewer hotel changes; Istanbul and Cappadocia alone make a relaxed week.

Budget tips

  • Shoulder seasons (April to May, September to October) give the best value.
  • Cave hotels range from simple to luxurious; mid-range ones are lovely.
  • Book the balloon and domestic flights with the package to avoid peak-season prices.
