Summer escapes from the UAE: cooler destinations for June to August

Georgia, Uzbekistan, Turkey and Salalah all peak in June. Where to go when the Gulf heats up.

When the Gulf heats up, the searches change. Georgia, Uzbekistan and Turkey peak in June, Salalah takes over in July and August, and Europe fills up with UAE families once schools close. The goal is simple: cooler air, green landscapes and a break from air-conditioning, ideally within a few hours' flight.

Here's where to escape, month by month, and how to plan around school holidays and Eid.

Georgia

Cool mountain air in Kazbegi and Svaneti, wine country in Kakheti, and Batumi on the Black Sea for a beach. It's the most popular summer escape from the UAE, and suits families with children of every age. Georgia packages.

Salalah

From late June to September, the khareef monsoon turns Oman's Dhofar region green and misty, with waterfalls, meadows and temperatures far below the Gulf's. It's a short flight from Dubai and a favourite long-weekend escape for families. Salalah.

Armenia and Azerbaijan

Armenia's Lake Sevan and Dilijan's forests are cool and calm; Azerbaijan's Gabala and Sheki offer green hills and cable cars after a city break in Baku. Armenia, Azerbaijan.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Almaty sits beneath snow-capped mountains, with Big Almaty Lake, Medeu and the Charyn Canyon nearby. Uzbekistan's Samarkand and Bukhara are spectacular but hot by July; go in early June. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan.

Switzerland and Scandinavia

Alpine lakes, mountain railways and Norway's fjords at their best, with long days and mild weather. Apply for the Schengen visa early; May and June are the busiest months for appointments. Switzerland, Scandinavia.

Kenya

July to October is the Masai Mara's great migration and the cool dry season. An unforgettable family adventure, about five hours from Dubai. Kenya safari.

Kerala in the monsoon

For many families, summer means a trip home. The monsoon is Kerala's season for Ayurveda, waterfalls and quiet hill stations. See Kerala around a family visit.

Plan around school holidays and Eid

  • UAE school summer holidays usually run from early July to late August. Flights on the first and last weekends are the most expensive.
  • Islamic New Year and other summer public holidays create long weekends; see UAE public holidays 2027.
  • Book in spring for the best flights and hotels; summer prices rise sharply from May.

Visas

Check entry rules for every passport in the family before you book. Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan offer simple e-visas or visa-free entry for many nationalities; Europe needs a Schengen visa for many. See visa-free destinations by passport.
